Introduction
Equidox is a cloud-based PDF remediation tool that helps users convert inaccessible PDF files into accessible documents that meet digital accessibility standards such as WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). At UConn, Equidox is used by faculty, staff, and student workers who create, review, or remediate PDFs for courses, websites, and administrative materials, making documents more accessible to people who use screen readers and other assistive technologies.
ITS manages a seven-seat license for the University (up to seven people at a time can use it). If you would like access or have questions about using it, please email itaccessibility@uconn.edu.
Benefits of Equidox
- Online platform (no installation required)
- Makes PDF accessibility faster and easier: Equidox uses AI-powered tools to automatically detect document elements, correct reading order, identify lists and tables, and reduce the amount of manual tagging required.
- Designed for non-experts: Users do not need advanced PDF accessibility or tag-tree expertise to create accessible documents, making it practical for faculty, staff, and student workers.
- Helps meet accessibility requirements: Equidox is designed to support compliance with accessibility standards such as WCAG, ADA, and Section 508 requirements.
- Improves efficiency for remediation projects: Features such as automated list detection, table detection, and centralized alt-text management help users remediate large numbers of PDFs more quickly.
- Supports collaboration and training: Multiple users can work on documents, and the software includes training and support resources for teams.
Did you know one of Equidox’s most useful features is the ability to easily fix reading order? If content needs to be read between two existing sections, you can simply use a decimal number, such as 2.5 between 2 and 3, instead of renumbering the entire page, making PDF remediation much faster.
